Track pics

Our first track meet was on Thursday, March 24. I went as an unofficial assistant to the coach and official photographer for the school website. The boys' team won their portion of the meet; the girls placed third overall, with a number of individual wins (notably the high jump, won by Whittney in a tense tie-breaker round). It was a blast, and I just hope this week's meet isn't rained out.

You can see the pictures as a slide show at our school's "brag book" photo gallery. Click the "GMS Track and Field" link there and the pics should load on your computer and start the slide show automatically. I kept copies for myself, of course, so I may post a few of them here eventually.

(At the same site, there's a slide show of our girls' basketball team, both 7th and 8th grades; click the link, it's pretty good.)

I'm still having the time of my life, as Green Day would say. Normally I can't wait for summer; this year, I definitely can.

Best heard on their live album Everything, Everything. It makes me want to laugh, cry, and soar, all at the same time.

Ceasura

An unexpected thing: a weekend with no obligations. Original planning called for me to go to Virginia to pick up my sister from her spring break, but thanks to poor weather up there -- and an uncle unwilling to endure any more of it, and heading south to warmer climes -- I get to stay right here in Georgia instead.

It isn't that I don't want to go home. It's that I don't want to travel. There's a difference. If only teleportation existed, I'd go to Virginia every day. Then come back here.

So: options. Two movies out this week that I want to see: Robots and Hostage. The former because it should bear the new Star Wars Episode III trailer; the latter because it has gunfire and explosions and an interesting concept, as expressed in the ad copy: would you sacrifice your own family to save someone else's?

The new Star Wars trailer debuted last night following The O.C. -- my cable was kind enough to cut out halfway through the trailer, showing only blue screen during the pivotal moments of the preview. Thank God for bootleggers.

Actually, since I'm basically thanking God for people who steal something that isn't theirs and make it available to me, perhaps I shouldn't.

But then, it's not my fault the cable went out. Ah, moral dilemmas...

But the bootleggers exist, and I have a couple of very nice copies of the trailer... or at least, I might, if the first part of this sentence weren't a complete lie. You hear that, MPAA? You hear that, privacy-invading legal watchdogs? Complete. Lie.

The trailer, what I've seen of it -- which MAY be the entire thing, multiple times, at various speeds, or maybe not -- is, for a Star Wars geek like me, nothing short of breathtaking. Finally, the movie seems destined to take the darker tone the prequel trilogy should've had from the get-go; the trailer opens with Senator Palpatine (aka the Emperor from the original trilogy) talking up the Dark Side of the Force with Anakin, and it's the only quiet moment in a trailer chock-full of action, anguish, and surprises. If the movie manages to be half as good as the trailer suggests... well, honestly, I'll be disappointed. Maybe three-quarters would be good enough.

Of course, movies aren't the only option. There's also videogames -- or rather, THE videogame that has become my obsession. That would be NBA Live 2005, and my latest dynasty -- the pathetic Charlotte Bobcats. Not so pathetic this season; under my brilliant coaching (and the addition of a shooting guard who looks remarkably like an idealized version of me, and who is averaging a quintuple double (points, rebounds, assists, steals, and -- so help me -- blocks), Charlotte's working their way through what I hope will be a perfect season. 23-0, that's the record so far -- despite a touch-and-go game against the Houston Rockets on their home court last night, during which the Rockets led far more often than I could ever find comfortable, even being up by eight at the beginning of the fourth quarter. And my best shooters -- Jason Kapono and the aforementioned Shooting Guard Who Must Not Be Named -- went ice cold during much of the first half. Strong defense kept us in the game, and when we finally warmed up in the fourth... well, the final score gave no indication at all of how close the game actually was.

Of course, they still haven't squared off against the powerhouses of the league. Sacramento, San Antonio, and the Lakers are all waiting in the wings. And just to prove that fictional basketball is weirder than the real thing, the Atlanta Hawks have the third best record in the league. They're hungry and they're waiting.

In real life: been walking with the track team this week -- VERY much fun, and almost enough to fill the howling void in my soul that was carved by the end of basketball season. Getting to not only spend time with my kids, but to do what they do during practice, to a small (infinitesimally small, really) extent anyway -- these are treasures not to be compared to silver or gold. Because I wouldn't trade them for either.

And I feel GOOD. Bring on the weekend.

Yet another personality quiz...

This particular one (via New Trommeter Times) requires more jumping through hoops than normal, but it's amusing.

My Inner Hero - Paladin!

I'm a Paladin!

I strive to help others, and to bring truth and harmony to the world however I can. Whether times are good or bad, you can always count on me. I'm a shoulder to cry on, a champion for the helpless, and an all around nice person.

How about you? Click here to find your own inner hero.

"A shoulder to cry on... and an all around nice person." I think I may hurl.
